AMERICAN Oi! REVIEW
2018 is kicking off with yet another blast from the past by one of our favorite labels Common People Records! This time around, the Catalonians collected the works (at least most of it) of Vigo’s Dr. Martens Beat for a ten-track compilation that simply looks amazing! Because when it comes down to the artwork, lay-out and use of color, "Smash Them Up" simply looks amazing, easily making it one of my favorite releases by Common People Records to date! Along with the 12-page booklet, featuring the history of the band, full-color photos, lyrics and interviews (unfortunately none of the interviews are in English) and colored vinyl (just 100 copies on blue vinyl though, so hurry up!), this release is pure eye candy! But in the end it’s about the music of course, but there are no complaints on that department either! Featuring the band’s 1999 debut EP "Fight For A Change" (originally released by Dim Records, but remastered for this release), 2001’s single "You’ll Never Walk Alone EP" (originally released by Bords De Seine), the song "In The Crowd" from the "Oi! What A Wonderful World" compilation (Bords De Seine, 2001) and three remastered tracks off the band’s self-released demo-cassette (1998), nearly all of Dr. Martens Beat’s work is featured on this LP – and it’s sounding great! With its classic 90’s/early 00’s sound, those who picked up the reissues of the Ruín Bois in 2016 ("Sempre En Galiza" by Common People Records as well) and 2017 (the "S/T" cassette released on 12" by Forza Imparable) will love this slab of wax as well. Not that strange of course, since Dr. Martens Beat also featured Ruín Bois’ members Jose and Sonia in its ranks as well. Again Common People Records smashed it up by unleashing another fine piece of Oi! history with this compilation, that is a must-have thanks to both its packaging and its no mess, no fuss, just pure impact on a Dr. Martens Beat sound!
